Life? What Life?

This is the sentiment many PhD students have during their candidature. A research-intensive degree can easily become all encompassing, and that is at any level (honours, masters, internship, eg). Researchers are passionate about their field, especially in the environmental field. We do this work because we love the plant, coral, ecological dynamics, etc that we are investigating. But the adage too much of a good thing is 100% relevant in this line of work. If we are not careful, our life can be consumed with the to do lists of a PhD (see below)
However, recent years have shown the importance of managing the time we spend at work. This is across all sectors. When people have better work-life balance, productivity increases and mental well-being improves. PhD candidates are not exempt from this. So how do we manage to keep sane? I am not sure if we have figured it out -- there have been quite a few crash outs during our time as candidates. However, all of us have just returned from some time off and think that maybe we can offer insights into keeping the mental health in check. So check back in next few weeks to see how we manage life!
