Conferences are upon us!

At least for us coral researchers! Is there a conference season?
Conferences, we have seen, are stressful. Its overwhelming to be in a hotel, conference centre, or resort with all the biggest names and up-n-comers in your field. You are literally on a stage sometimes. If feels like the lights are so bright that you're a little blind, and you're trying the old wives tale of imagining your dream supervisor naked (and isn’t really calming the nerves).

However, conferences can be an amazing opportunity. Kathryn found potential supervisors and secured a Masters because of a conference. Hannah added a new chapter to her PhD thesis because of a presentation. It can help facilitate career opportunities and should 100% be included within your career journey.
Some quick tips for our blog members!
Hannah: When interviewing for labs -- be sure to ask about conferences and the level of support for students to attend. You need to weigh the financial commitment and career opportunities, and always see if there are any travel grants you can apply for.
Caitlin: Don't be afraid to approach presenters and ask questions, most people want to talk about their research and this can be a great way to introduce yourself.
Sanna: Remember that going to conferences isn't just about presenting your own work - its a great opportunity to see all of the other amazing things happening in your field!
Kathryn: Go say Hi - no matter if its a professor, a student, or your science icon. You have no idea what doors may open based on a simple gesture.
Over the next month, Hannah and Kathryn will share their perspectives on conferences and hopefully you can find some solace that no data is okay and sending an email before and after can be a defining moment. Enjoy some of the highlights of the conferences we've attended below!
